Professor John Marley MD MBChB FRCP(Edin) FRACGP FACRRM DA DRCOG FPCert MAICD

Professor Marley holds a Chair in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland. He also holds conjoint Chairs at the University of Adelaide and at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has recently concurrently held the post of Director of Strategy and Role Re-design in NSW Health in its Clinical Services Redesign Program.

From 2001 to 2006 he was Pro Vice-Chancellor Health at the University of Newcastle. The Faculty that he established and headed for five years contained four schools, several research centres, some 4000 students in 11 health professional programs, three other undergraduate degrees and numerous postgraduate programs. During this time he opened Pharmacy and Oral Health Programs.

Prior to this he was Foundation Professor of General Practice and Dean of students in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

His past clinical experience includes practice in cardiology, emergency medicine and in metropolitan and rural and remote general practice. He continues as an active clinician in general practice and emergency medicine.

Professor Marley’s research profile spans from the laboratory bench to the largest of clinical trials. He has published extensively in major journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, British Medical Journal and Medical Journal of Australia. His research includes very large studies such as the International Hormone Replacement Treatment Outcome Study and the Second Australian National Blood Pressure Study.

Medication use and prescribing have been a lifelong interest and he has been part of: the Australian Prescriber, Therapeutic Guidelines, the Drug and Therapeutics Information Service, the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee, the Drug Utilisation Sub Committee of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and he was instrumental in the development of the Australian Medicines Handbook. He has been a lead figure in the International Society for Pharmaco Epidemiology and has international recognition in this Discipline. His unique experience also includes a period as Head of Drug Safety and Clinical Research in the pharmaceutical industry.

Professor Marley has provided policy advice to Commonwealth and State Governments. He is Chair of the Board of the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, a member of the NSW Health Strategic Advisory Committee and a member of the Area Health Advisory Council of the Hunter New England Area Health Service. His development of the Uni-Clinic model of integrated, team-based, multi-professional care has been a key component in the development of the Commonwealth Government’s Super Clinic Program. Professor Marley serves on a number of other major national and international committees and boards.

Professor Marley is an expert in the full continuum of medical and health professional education from undergraduate through postgraduate programs and research higher degree supervision. He is an accreditor and reviewer of educational programs. His international education profile includes appointment as Chair of the Academic Council of the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur and he has extensive other education and research partnerships throughout the world.
